President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that whenever policies alien to Islam were implemented, national independence was lost.

Speaking at the official National Day ceremony held today in HA. Utheemu, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that whenever policies alien or contrary to Islam were implemented throughout history, the Maldives' national independence was either lost or pushed to the brink of peril.

The President noted that National Day serves as a vital lesson highlighting the blessings of remaining steadfast in Islam versus the bitter humiliation of forsaking it. He emphasized that every good virtue linked to the nation revolves around the essence of faith, describing Islam as the central axis of the country and the Holy Quran as the core of Maldivian national identity.

Reflecting on history, President Muizzu stated that the Maldives fell under Portuguese subjugation for years because a single individual renounced Islam, severing their spiritual connection to the homeland and eroding patriotic love. He stressed that abandoning religion was not merely a betrayal of faith, but an act of treason against the Maldivian state, its sovereignty, independence, honor, and history.

The President highlighted that Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu and the three Utheemu brothers launched their struggle from the Kanduvalu Mosque in Utheemu solely for the sake of Islam, with the resolute goal of either securing victory for the nation and religion or attaining martyrdom. He concluded that this historic struggle clearly demonstrates that the country's freedom and sovereignty are inextricably linked with Islam.
