Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to contest the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential primary for the 2028 presidential election.

Solih made the decision following a meeting yesterday with a team of close MDP associates, although he has not yet formally announced his candidacy.

Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and MDP President Abdulla Shahid have also expressed interest in contesting the party’s presidential primary.

There are also reports that several other figures, including former Vice President Faisal Naseem and Hulhumalé South MP Dr Ahmed Shamheed, are interested in contesting the primary.

The MDP has yet to announce a date for the presidential primary but is reportedly working towards holding the election next year.
