The issue of towing vehicles after issuing fines has been submitted to the Parliament's National Development and Heritage Committee seeking a resolution.

The matter was submitted to the committee by MDP MP for the Galolhu North constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo).

In a letter sent to the committee requesting a solution to the issue, it was noted that there are concerns regarding the regulations governing land vehicles taken into police custody, which were formulated under the Land Transport Act.

The letter highlighted that while the regulations outline how vehicle owners must pay fines for violations, it also mandates that vehicles towed into police custody are not released until after 48 hours have passed.

It further stated that adequate parking space has not been established in the Greater Malé area, even as a large number of citizens rely on land vehicles for their daily commute to work and for taking family members to school and job locations.

Therefore, it was pointed out that towing vehicles used by citizens for their daily activities, on top of issuing fines, causes significant hardship for the public.

To address these concerns, the MP requested in his letter that a meeting be convened with the Parliament's Regulations Committee and relevant police officials to explore how a resolution can be achieved.
