An important agreement was signed yesterday to establish agroforestry farms on ten islands across the Maldives, aiming to ensure food security and support the major five million tree-planting initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment.

The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Fisheries.

The Environment Ministry stated that under this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), trees will be planted on ten selected islands to develop them as agroforestry farms.

The Ministry noted that this project is being carried out under the special priority given by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration toward environmental protection and enhancing national economic self-sufficiency.

"The main objective is to boost agricultural production in the Maldives and build a sustainable system that reinforces efforts to adapt to climate change. Under this agreement, the Ministry of Fisheries has agreed to supply 400,000 trees to assist the five million tree-planting program," the Environment Ministry said.

Additionally, agreements have already been signed with local councils to develop ten nurseries across ten islands.

Sharing the latest updates on the five million tree-planting program, the Ministry stated that 1.8 million trees have been planted so far. While various entities have pledged to plant a total of 5.8 million trees, two parties have already been designated to supply plants for the project.

The Environment Ministry added that upon completion, the project will enhance the green cover of Maldivian islands and bring significant growth to the agricultural sector.
