The Malé City Council has begun efforts to address water pressure issues affecting residents of high-rise buildings in the capital.

The matter was raised by Deputy Mayor Meekail Mohamed Riyaz during the council's 10th official meeting. He said residents, particularly those living on higher floors, face significant water supply disruptions during weekends and peak usage hours, with some households reporting no water at all.

Meekail noted that while all households pay the same tariff to the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), residents in upper-floor apartments often have to spend more than MVR 80,000 to install pumping systems to ensure an adequate water supply.

He proposed holding discussions with MWSC and the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) to identify solutions, including allowing the use of affordable third-party pumps that meet safety standards.

Mayor Adam Azim acknowledged the issue as a major concern for residents and said the council would work to find a prompt solution.
