President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that preserving the independence secured through the sacrifice of our forefathers is the heaviest and most important responsibility resting on our shoulders today.

He made these remarks in a post on X today on the occasion of the Maldives' 61st Independence Day.

In the post, the President extended Independence Day greetings to Maldivians, remembered the heroes who sacrificed across various eras to protect the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, and offered prayers for them.

Highlighting the importance of preserving national independence, the President noted in his post that prioritizing patriotism and enhancing the capabilities of youth are crucial to fully fulfilling this responsibility.

Furthermore, he stated that taking pride in national identity and maintaining unity and strong cohesion within society are also vital to sustaining independence.

"Therefore, on the occasion of Independence Day, I urge everyone to embody these qualities and move forward with the nation in freedom. Success smiles upon those who persevere," the President said.

The Independence Day of the Maldives is commemorated annually to mark the occasion on July 26, 1965, when the British government recognized the Maldives as a fully sovereign, independent state.
