The Ministry of Housing has invited proposals from Maldivian-owned companies to develop 2,100 housing units across 13 islands under a contractor-financed model.

The ministry said the project forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to improve access to affordable housing and support urban development across the atolls. Only companies that are 100 per cent Maldivian-owned are eligible to submit proposals.

The largest developments will be in Lh. Naifaru, GDh. Thinadhoo, Fuvahmulah City and Hithadhoo in Addu City, with 300 housing units planned in each location. The project also includes 200 units each in Addu Feydhoo and L. Gan, 100 units each in HA. Hoarafushi, R. Ungoofaaru, M. Muli and Dh. Meedhoo, 50 units in B. Thulhaadhoo, and 25 units each in Maradhoo and Maradhoo Feydhoo.

The government will provide land for the developments free of charge, while the selected contractors will finance and complete construction within two years of receiving the sites.

The ministry said 60 per cent of the housing units will be affordable 900-square-foot homes, with a maximum selling price of MVR 1.5 million. The remaining 40 per cent may be sold by contractors at market rates.

Requests for clarification will be accepted until 4 August, while proposals must be submitted by 1:00 p.m. on 17 August.
