Velana International Airport (VIA) has set a new record for the highest volume of air cargo transhipment handled in a single day.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said 114 tonnes of cargo were transhipped through VIA on 12 July, surpassing the previous record of 100 tonnes.
MACL also reported that 7,928 tonnes of cargo were handled through the airport during the first six months of the year, a 15 per cent increase from 6,879 tonnes during the same period last year. March recorded the highest monthly volume, with 1,791 tonnes of cargo.
The largest share of inbound cargo was handled by FCOM Holdings (27 per cent), followed by SriLankan Airlines (25 per cent), China Eastern Airlines (7 per cent), Beijing Capital Airlines (7 per cent) and Singapore Airlines (6 per cent).
For outbound cargo, Turkish Airlines and British Airways each accounted for 14 per cent of the total, followed by Aeroflot (12 per cent), Virgin Atlantic (9 per cent) and Qatar Airways (9 per cent).
