Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muttalib has stated that the relocation of people from V. Rakeedhoo to another island under the population consolidation policy has not been carried out because an agreement could not be reached with the residents of the island.
The Minister said this while responding to a question asked by MDP member for the Keyodhoo constituency, Mohamed Niushad, regarding the issue of some residents of V. Rakeedhoo requesting to be relocated to another island at today's sitting of the People's Majlis.
The Minister said that the government's intention is still to relocate the people from Rakeedhoo to another island.
"The government even sent a team for a survey to hand over land plots to those individuals from Rakeedhoo, but some people of the island do not want to relocate,"
The Minister said that the government's policy has always been to relocate the citizens with the agreement of all the residents of the island.
"Therefore, those discussions are ongoing, and if the residents of the island agree, we will start that work even now,"
However, the Minister said that since an agreement has not yet been reached on the matter, the work has not started.
During President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Rakeedhoo last year, some residents of the island requested to be relocated to another island. They also noted that the island was K. Thulusdhoo.
