The amount received as Zakat al-Mal (wealth tax) last month has doubled.
According to MIRA's financial report for last June, MVR 21.2 million was received as Zakat al-Mal during that month. This figure represents a twofold increase compared to the MVR 10.6 million collected as Zakat al-Mal in June of last year.
Statistics show that the state has received MVR 79.6 million as Zakat al-Mal so far this year, whereas MVR 61.5 million was collected during the same period last year.
The Maldives Zakat House has determined the Nisab (minimum threshold) for paying Zakat al-Mal on money to be MVR 21,836.50, calculated at a rate of MVR 36.70 per gram of silver for 595 grams.
Zakat al-Mal was previously paid to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. However, since 2016, the collection of Zakat al-Mal has been transferred to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
