Two Maldivian doctors at ADK Hospital have successfully performed a shoulder replacement surgery.

The procedure was led by two specialists working in the hospital's orthopedic department: Senior Consultant Orthopedics Dr. Mohamed Mishwar Ashfaq and Consultant Orthopedic Sports and Trauma Arthroscopic Surgeon Dr. Mohamed Razzaan Rameez.

ADK stated that shoulder replacement surgeries at the hospital were previously conducted by bringing in experienced doctors from countries such as Malaysia and Thailand.

Following the successful operation, Dr. Mishwar explained that a shoulder replacement becomes necessary when the shoulder muscles are torn to the point that movement is restricted. He added that the surgery relieves pain and makes it easier for patients to carry out everyday activities. The doctor further noted that shoulder replacement surgeries are relatively less common compared to knee replacement surgeries.

Dr. Mishwar highlighted that on the very same day of the surgery, the patient was already able to lift and move their arm up to 90 degrees.

Dr. Razzaan confirmed that this service is now available at the hospital at any time.
