President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that the Government's policy is to tackle drug abuse through a holistic and comprehensive approach focused on rehabilitation, prevention and addressing its root causes.
Speaking in the latest episode of The Pulse podcast, released today, the President said the Government's priority is to help young people affected by drug abuse rebuild their lives and become productive members of society.
He stressed that drug abuse cannot be solved through short-term measures alone, identifying housing challenges and past development policies as key factors contributing to the issue.
The President said the Government's strategy combines anti-drug efforts with broader social initiatives, including improving access to housing, creating employment and income opportunities for young people, supporting small businesses, expanding education, strengthening healthcare, and enabling women and stay-at-home individuals to earn an income from home.
He also announced plans to develop a modern rehabilitation and social reintegration facility for young offenders on reclaimed land at Uthuru Thila Falhu. The President said proposals for the project are currently being evaluated and expressed confidence that construction will begin soon, with the facility expected to be completed during the current presidential term.
