More than 3,200 people in the Maldives have linked their accounts to PayPal within 15 days of the service becoming available, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.
Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office on Monday, the President said 3,280 people had linked their accounts to PayPal, while 2,159 had activated the PayPal Wallet service.
The President described the response as an encouraging start, stating that the service would create new opportunities for individuals and businesses to receive international payments. He added that the introduction of PayPal would provide a significant boost to the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Maldives.
PayPal was officially launched in the Maldives through Ooredoo Maldives after the company received an Inward Remittance Licence from the Maldives Monetary Authority in October 2025. The Government had previously launched PayPal's withdrawal service and continued discussions with PayPal and US authorities to expand the platform's services in the country.
The introduction of PayPal is expected to strengthen the Maldives' digital economy by making international transactions easier for freelancers, content creators and online businesses. The service also fulfils a presidential pledge by President Dr Muizzu.
