The government has begun work to develop baitfish cultivation in the Maldives to address challenges faced by fishermen during periods of bad weather, according to the Ministry of Fisheries.

Speaking on PSM's Raajje Miadhu programme, Minister of State for Fisheries Mohamed Muththalib said the project is progressing successfully and aims to begin supplying baitfish for fishermen's needs by 2028.

He said the government plans to develop baitfish farming as a dedicated industry. Areas near K. Maniyafushi, another reef near the island, and a site in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll have been designated for the initiative.

Muthalib said an agreement has been reached with a company engaged in mariculture in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and practical work to cultivate baitfish is now underway.

The project aims to reduce the costs incurred by fishermen in sourcing bait and enable fishing activities to continue without interruption even during periods of rough weather.

The Maldives already farms species such as sea cucumbers and prawns, and has recently begun exporting farmed seaweed.
