The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has announced plans to develop a second airport in Laamu Atoll by constructing an airport in Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo.
In a video released today, the ministry said the project fulfils President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to establish a second airport in the atoll.
The ministry noted that Laamu Atoll is naturally beautiful, historically significant and has strong potential for economic development. It said residents have long needed an additional airport to improve transport links and support the atoll’s future growth.
Currently, the only airport in Laamu Atoll is located in Kadhdhoo.
The ministry said Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo, one of the country's largest islands by land area, has significant potential for population growth and development. The new airport is expected to create economic opportunities and boost tourism by improving access to the natural attractions of nearby islands.
The ministry added that residents of Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo would no longer need to make the current 45-minute journey to Kadhdhoo to access air transport services. Residents of Maabaidhoo and Dhanbidhoo are also expected to benefit from the project.
