The Criminal Court has sentenced a woman to six months in prison for failing to report a sexual offense committed against a child despite being fully aware of it. The verdict was delivered last Thursday against Aishath Shaira.

In its ruling, the court sentenced Shaira to the six-month prison term pursuant to Section 53(a) and (b) of the Act on Special Measures Against Child Sexual Offenders, read in conjunction with Section 104 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

In addition to this offense, Shaira was also convicted of knowing complicity in a murder case on the same day. For the murder conviction, she received a separate prison sentence of two years and six months, along with a judicial mandate to fast for 60 consecutive days as expiation (Kaffarah).

However, the specific details surrounding these cases remain unclear, as the Criminal Court withheld the publication of the official case reports to safeguard public moral standards.
