The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Fitness and Sports has instructed that all sports activities be suspended during prayer times at sports venues across the Maldives.

In a circular sent to sports associations on Monday, the ministry stated that all sporting activities must be halted for 20 minutes from the time the call to prayer is made. The policy applies to sports associations, clubs, academies and privately organised sporting activities.

The ministry instructed associations to ensure the policy is implemented in all activities conducted under their supervision.

The directive follows remarks by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu earlier this month, in which he said sports activities should pause for a designated period during prayer times. The President stated that, as the Maldives is a 100 per cent Muslim nation, daily activities should be carried out in accordance with Islamic principles.

He also noted that facilities for ablution and prayer would be established at sports complexes and venues to make it easier for athletes and spectators to perform prayers. According to the President, the new arrangements will also be introduced at existing sports facilities, including the Maafannu Stadium and other sports arenas.
