Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to work with whoever wins the MDP chairperson election to ensure the Government remains accountable.

Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in the MDP internal election on Saturday, Solih said he expects the party’s new leadership to prioritise holding the current administration accountable and responding to public concerns.

He said the public had already expressed dissatisfaction with the Government and stressed that it was the responsibility of the party leadership to act on those concerns. Solih added that regardless of the election outcome, he would continue working with the MDP and support efforts to strengthen oversight of the Government.

Commenting on the candidates, Solih said that if Meekail Ahmed Naseem wins, the party would be led by a younger generation. If former President Mohamed Nasheed wins, he said the party would benefit from Nasheed’s extensive leadership experience.

Solih also expressed confidence that MDP members would not want a repeat of the party’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election and said he hopes the party will emerge stronger with renewed energy ahead of the 2028 election.
