Expat workers in the Maldives remitted USD 157.5 million overseas in 2025, according to the Maldives Monetary Authority’s (MMA) Annual Report.
The report states that remittances sent by expatriates living and working in the Maldives increased by 89 per cent compared with 2024, representing an increase of USD 74.2 million.
According to the MMA, the rise was largely driven by a greater use of formal channels for sending money abroad.
Overall, more than USD 167.6 million was transferred overseas through over 139,000 transactions during the year. Compared with 2024, the number of transactions increased by 13 per cent, while the total value of funds transferred rose by eight per cent.
Expat workers accounted for the largest share of outbound remittances. Maldivians made up only six per cent of the total amount sent abroad.
The report also noted that the number of overseas money transfer transactions carried out by Maldivians increased by 11 per cent compared with the previous year.
