The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has increased the price it pays fishermen for tuna to MVR 20 per kilogram.

MIFCO announced that it will purchase yellowfin tuna weighing between 10 and 15 kilograms for MVR 20 per kilogram from its facilities in Felivaru, Kooddoo and Addu, as well as from collection points in GDh. Thinadhoo, Faresmaathodaa, GA. Dhaandhoo and Fuvahmulah City.

Yellowfin tuna weighing more than 15 kilograms will be purchased at MVR 25 per kilogram.

The increase to MVR 20 per kilogram fulfils a key Government pledge aimed at supporting fishermen and strengthening the fisheries sector.

The Government has also introduced several measures to support the industry, including facilitating access to bank loans, expanding fisheries capacity and ensuring timely payments to fishermen.
