Bank of Maldives (BML) has clarified that subscription payments for commonly used online services are not affected by the restrictions placed on foreign transactions using Rufiyaa cards.

Last month, BML introduced new limits on overseas e-commerce transactions and daily foreign spending as part of measures to manage foreign currency demand. The changes raised concerns among customers about whether payments for services such as Netflix and Apple subscriptions would be disrupted.

However, BML said subscription payments are not included in the bank’s daily foreign spending limit and will not be blocked under the current restrictions.

The bank acknowledged that some merchants may still reject subscription payments for various reasons. BML advised customers to contact the bank if a subscription payment is declined, adding that the issue can be resolved promptly.

BML also said it is closely monitoring cases where subscription payments are cancelled or rejected.

Meanwhile, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated earlier this week that BML had indicated it would introduce significant relief to the card spending limits later this month.
