Ahmed Nazim, the PNC Member of Parliament for the Dhiggaru constituency, has denied the allegations made against him in the resolution submitted to the People's Majlis by his own party to dismiss him from the post of Deputy Speaker.

In a press statement issued to announce his resignation from the post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament just moments before today's parliamentary sitting, Nazim denied the accusations levied to remove him from the position.

The resolution submitted by the PNC to the parliament to dismiss Nazim from his post contained allegations citing several reasons for his removal.

The resolution submitted to the parliament, signed by 73 PNC MPs to remove Nazim from the post of Deputy Speaker, included allegations of abusing official influence for undue advantages and encouraging the disruption of the interests of the People's Majlis.

Additionally, the accusations included Nazim shirking his responsibilities, showing bias toward specific sides, repeatedly acting to the detriment of parliamentary interests, and demonstrating prejudice by leaning toward a particular political ideology in all affairs of the People's Majlis.

The resolution further stated that it was evident Nazim was biased in discharging his official duties and that he had heavily neglected his duty to protect the rights and privileges of all members of the parliament. It also alleged that due to Nazim's actions, the Deputy Speaker had become an obstacle to members fulfilling their mandated duties.

Denying these allegations, Nazim noted in his press statement today that the resolution failed to present any evidence or proof to substantiate the accusations against him. He emphasized that all the allegations are entirely baseless, given that no member or other party has ever filed a complaint claiming he violated the Constitution or the Parliament's rules of procedure through any action or omission, whether in his capacity as Deputy Speaker or as an MP.

"I have discharged the duties and responsibilities of the post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament faithfully and with integrity within legal boundaries. Under no circumstances have I shirked my official responsibilities or hesitated to fulfill them," Nazim said.

Nazim stated that he had never obstructed any member from performing their duties or responsibilities. Instead, he maintained that he had facilitated and paved the way for members to discharge their duties to the fullest extent permitted by laws and regulations.

He further stated that he had never done anything to compromise harmony among parliament members, nor had he abused his official influence or taken undue advantage of his position.

"I have performed my duties and responsibilities in accordance with legal frameworks, with equality and fairness, without any discrimination among members. As I have not done anything contrary to laws and regulations out of adherence to any particular political ideology, my work has always been focused on ensuring equal opportunities for all members within the boundaries of the law and regulations."He also mentioned that, as Deputy Speaker, he had always worked to maintain the rule of law in the Maldives by impartially and equally protecting and safeguarding the rights and privileges of all members, as stipulated under the Parliamentary Privileges and Powers Act and the Parliament's rules of procedure.

"Despite this being the case, since nearly all members of the ruling party's parliamentary group have signed and submitted a motion to remove me from the post of Deputy Speaker, I believe that responding to the request is the civilized approach in accordance with democratic principles when nearly everyone who voted for an elected position requests that individual's removal, even if the reasons stated therein are not the truth. Therefore, while denying all allegations made against me without exception, I have resigned from the post of Deputy Speaker of the People's Majlis effective immediately," Nazim's statement read.

However, Nazim stated in the press release that he will always remain a servant of the public in working to uphold the rule of law in the Maldivian state and secure a happy and prosperous life for the citizens.
