Following the resignation of Dhiggaru constituency PNC MP Ahmed Nazim from the post of Deputy Speaker of the People's Majlis today, it has been decided to hold a parliamentary sitting tomorrow to elect a new Deputy Speaker.
Nazim resigned from the post today just moments before the motion submitted by his party, PNC, to dismiss him from the position was scheduled to begin during today's sitting. He announced his resignation in a issued press statement. In the statement, Nazim denied the allegations made against him by the PNC regarding his removal from the post.
Today's Majlis sitting was initially scheduled with the sole agenda item of proceeding with the dismissal of Deputy Speaker Nazim. Therefore, while opening today's sitting, Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that although the motion to dismiss the Deputy Speaker was on the agenda, Nazim had resigned from his post today in accordance with the Constitution. The Speaker stated that the matter of Nazim's dismissal has consequently concluded.
Following this, the Speaker announced that an additional sitting of the Majlis would be held today at 1:00 PM to elect a new Deputy Speaker. After making the announcement, he adjourned the morning sitting.
However, the Majlis secretariat later informed members that the sitting scheduled for 1:00 PM today would not take place. Instead, the Majlis administration announced that a sitting of the People's Majlis will be held tomorrow. Information has been received that tomorrow's sitting will be dedicated to electing a new Deputy Speaker to the Parliament.
