Social media activist Shamoon (Lucas) has been released from police custody after being arrested during a protest in Male’ City calling for the release of jailed journalists.
Lucas was detained on the night of May 13 during demonstrations demanding the release of two journalists from “Adhadhu,” who were jailed for contempt of court.
Police arrested 10 people during the protests. Seven were later released, while the court extended the remand of three individuals, including Lucas. He was released on Sunday.
The protest was attended by former President Mohamed Nasheed and members of the MDP parliamentary group. Demonstrators called for press freedom and the release of the jailed journalists. Clashes between protesters and police were reported in some areas.
Journalist Leevaan Ali Naseer was released on Friday after completing a 10-day jail sentence. Mohamed Shahuzan is expected to be released on Wednesday after serving a 15-day sentence.
