The Criminal Court has sentenced Ali Nazeer to two years, four months and 24 days in prison for fraudulently taking large sums of money from a man under the pretext of importing goods.

According to the court, Nazeer obtained money from Ahmed Nisham by claiming he would bring various items from abroad. The case involved several payments, including MVR 721,000 to purchase Yanma 405 engines from Singapore, MVR 230,000 to import a vessel, and MVR 48,000 to bring six motorcycles.

He also collected MVR 60,000 for a 1.5-tonne pickup truck, MVR 8,000 to release motorcycles in the Maldives, and MVR 10,000 to speed up the clearance process. In addition, he received USD 1,500 for expenses related to transporting the goods by boat.

The court said an additional MVR 87,450 was also taken from Nisham as part of the scheme.
