Secretary General of MDP, Anas Abdul Sattar has said that the officers involved in the manhandling of a suspect came into his apartment building, and had warned them to delete video footage which implicates the officers.
Anas took to Twitter to reveal that the incident occurred in a house in front of his. He said that the officers in question had come into his house, and accused them of recording the video and tried to search their phones.
"The incident occurred inside a house in front of ours. These “officers” came into our house, questioned us about this video, went on to the next floor and came back again, accused us of recording the video, tried to search the phone, warned us to delete any videos," Anas said in his tweet.
Upon inquiring as to who they were, the officers showed them their badge and had claimed that a police operation was in progress.
Maldives Police Service has since decided to suspended the officers who were captured manhandling a suspect during a house search in Maafannu.
A viral video on social media shows four policemen in plain clothes brutally beating up a man during the house search. Following this, the Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameedh addressed the issue on Twitter.
"I have viewed a video footage where officers in plain clothes are seen manhandling a suspect, during a search at a house in Maafannu under a court warrant tonight. This is unacceptable. I will be suspending the involved officers immediately and have them investigated," CP Hameedh said in a tweet.
He further added that he has requested the President of the Human Rights Commission to investigate the case of manhandling by police officers and revealed that he has submitted the names of the officers involved in the operation.
