The Criminal Court has ordered journalist Livaan Ali Naseer to appear for questioning over a video documentary linked to the court.

The court also banned the broadcast or sharing of any direct or indirect content related to the documentary, warning that violations could amount to contempt of court.

According to local media outlet Number, Livaan was instructed to appear before the court on Wednesday morning in connection with the case.

The court order stated that the documentary was not being circulated within the community and claimed it failed to properly present the victim’s story. It also alleged that information and documents related to the trial were not disclosed.

Meanwhile, authorities have charged CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Editor Hassan Mohamed with espionage. Both reportedly exercised their right to remain silent during police questioning.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said court orders must be obeyed. He added that while freedom of expression exists in the Maldives, it must remain within the limits of Islam and the Constitution.
