Leading tourism organizations in the Maldives have called on the government to help protect the tourism industry, which they say is facing losses of more than USD 500 million due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a joint statement, the National Hotels and Guest Houses Association and MATATO said tourist arrivals to the Maldives dropped by 15 to 20 percent in March and April compared to the same period last year.
The organizations said small and medium-sized businesses have been hit the hardest, including local guesthouses, travel agents, and tour operators. They warned that some businesses could close because of financial difficulties.
The groups have asked the government and financial institutions to provide relief measures, including interest-free loan moratoriums, loan restructuring, waiver of quota fees, and easier tax payment arrangements.
They also highlighted rising fuel and construction material costs as major challenges for the industry and urged the government to take immediate action to reduce expenses and improve access to financial assistance.
The organizations said a long-term support mechanism is needed to protect the tourism sector before the situation worsens further.
