The Elections Commission has instructed the Maldivian Democratic Party and People’s National Front to carry out political activities within the legal framework.

The commission said it received complaints that both parties made statements inciting violence during separate events held against the government. Letters have been sent urging them to comply with laws and regulations.

The EC emphasized that parties must avoid statements that violate social norms or facts and must not hold gatherings in unauthorized public areas. It also warned against personal attacks and actions that promote hatred within the community.

The directive follows concerns raised in parliament by Ibrahim Falah, who called for the EC to investigate whether political activities are lawful. Ibrahim Shujau also noted that ongoing protests are disrupting students and the public.

The commission reiterated that lawful political activity is welcome but must adhere to established regulations.
