Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his support for Fayyaz Ismail as the party’s candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
At a press conference, the two leaders outlined major proposals to reform the Maldives’ governance system and constitution. A key feature of the proposal is separating the roles of head of state and head of government.
Nasheed stated that he supports Fayyaz as the head of government under the proposed system. The plan suggests that the government leader would be elected directly by the public, while the president would be chosen by elected officials. However, the president could only be removed through a public vote.
Both leaders said they will seek the backing of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to implement these changes.
Nasheed added that he does not want to wait until 2028 to introduce the reforms and is prepared to push for immediate action, including public mobilization if necessary.
