Acting MDP Chairperson Abdul Gafoor Moosa has said interest in the party’s election victory rally declined after former President Mohamed Nasheed was not given a chance to speak.

Nasheed skipped the event, held at Artificial Beach to celebrate MDP’s wins in the local council, women’s development committee elections, and referendum. He later described the situation as “a very sad night” on social media.

Some party activists claimed Nasheed was initially included in the speaking lineup but was later replaced when the agenda changed. His absence was joined by former MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and several supporters, with some calling for Gafoor’s resignation.

Responding to the criticism, Gafoor said he was saddened by rumors surrounding the event, adding that efforts had been made to offer speaking opportunities. He expressed hope that party members would work together to strengthen the MDP.
