The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured a super majority in all city councils in the local council elections held yesterday.

While MDP already held majorities in most city councils except Malé City, the latest results show the party dominating across all cities, losing only one seat in each council.

The party’s five incumbent mayors were also re-elected for a second term: Malé City Mayor Adam Azim, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar, Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq, Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif, and Thinadhoo Mayor Saud Ali.

MDP candidates won the remaining seats by significant margins, consolidating the party’s strong position across city councils.
