President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will implement necessary improvements in accordance with the will of the people.
According to the provisional results of the Local Council elections and the public referendum held today, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured victories in both. Meanwhile, the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has taken the lead in the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.
In a post on X tonight, the President stated that he accepts the election results with respect. He also extended his congratulations to the successful candidates.
"I assure all beloved Maldivian citizens that, with the help of Almighty Allah, the government will undertake the necessary work to address areas for improvement in line with the pulse of the people," the President remarked.
Provisional results of the council elections show that the MDP has secured a super-majority in the councils of Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Thinadhoo City, and Malé City. The MDP has also won council seats in numerous other islands. According to the provisional data, the MDP won 42.7 percent of the council seats, while the PNC secured 42.3 percent.
In the WDC elections, the PNC won 44.3 percent of the seats, while the MDP secured 38.3 percent.
Regarding the public referendum counted so far, 70 percent of voters (11,709 people) voted "No" against holding two elections on the same day. Those who voted in favor of the proposal amounted to 4,986 people, representing 30 percent.
