The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into a fire that killed five people in an expatriate workers’ accommodation block on Dhigurah.

HRCM said the inquiry will examine the circumstances of the victims and the events surrounding the incident to determine whether any human rights violations occurred.

Two people were seriously injured in the fire and have been transferred to Malé for further medical treatment.

According to the Maldives Police Service, a special investigation team from Malé will travel to Dhigu Island to investigate the incident. The team will include a medical doctor.
