Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the 1988 coup conspirator, Abdulla Luthufee will be transferred back to the Maldives very soon and that he is related to the murders of any Maldivians.
Speaking to the press during a briefing held regarding the celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Group, President Nasheed said that the case has been looked into and that Luthufee will be transferred back to the Maldives. He noted that the government of Maldives is in talks with Sri Lankan government and the United Nations to facilitate the transfer of the fugitive, who has been living in hiding in Sri Lanka for the past nine years.
He further highlighted that Luthufee had presented himself to the Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka one day before the terror attacks in April, which left the Sri Lankan government unable to effectively communicate with the governments of other countries. He asserted that Sri Lanka too, is part of several UN charters.
President Nasheed also added that transfer of escaped fugitives were something seldom done successfully by the Maldivian government. As such, he stressed about the works of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to bring back Ibrahim Nasir while he was in Singapore.
