Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir and several other lawmakers from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have been charged over a protest held on October 3, 2025.

The Prosecutor General's Office said the charges relate to alleged violations of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. They are accused of gathering on the streets of Malé City, staging loud protests, obstructing public transport and businesses, disobeying police orders, and obstructing law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

The PG’s Office also stated that seven additional individuals were investigated in connection with the case. However, due to insufficient evidence and lack of common prosecutorial interest, their cases were referred back to the Maldives Police Service.
