The project to enhance the stormwater drainage system in Male' has been officially awarded to a Japanese company.

The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure announced yesterday that this initiative is being carried out under the Japanese government's Economic and Social Development Program, specifically as Package 2 of the "Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in Male' Island."

The agreement was signed with Teck International Cooperation on the 17th of this month. State Minister Hassan Rashid signed on behalf of the Ministry, while Director Makoto Yokoshi signed on behalf of Teck International Cooperation.

The primary scope of work under this package includes:

  • Installing necessary equipment to automate 16 existing pump stations in Male'.
  • Establishing a centralized monitoring station to oversee the operations of all 16 pump stations.
  • Providing a specialized jetting vehicle required for the maintenance of the drainage system.

This project is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of flood mitigation and water drainage efforts in the capital during heavy rainfall.
