The government will announce two new housing scheme categories within the next week and open applications early next month, Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has said.

Speaking on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu programme, the Minister stated that the initiative aims to expand opportunities for families who do not own land. The policy is expected to be made public before Ramadan.

One new category will allow individuals who have housing registered in a spouse’s name to apply separately for housing. The second category will enable individuals who jointly acquired land under the “landowner” scheme to apply separately, once the land is released with mutual agreement.

A total of 1,000 housing units and 1,000 plots will be allocated under each category. The Minister said the expansion is intended to ensure separate housing for each family.

Under the government’s “Housing for All” policy, 15,000 land plots and 7,900 flats are to be handed over in Rasmale’.
