Reclamation work at Giraavaru lagoon has officially begun, the government has announced.
In a post on X on Tuesday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said the long-planned project has started and shared photos and a video of the reclamation work underway in the lagoon. The project is being carried out by Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCC).
The previous administration had planned to allocate 2,000 land plots from Giraavaru Falhu to residents of Malé City under the “Binwariya” housing scheme. However, as the required land could not be provided there, the government decided to allocate remaining plots from Gulhifalhu instead. A total of 2,210 people applied for land relocation to Gulhifalhu.
According to the government, 160 hectares of land will be reclaimed from Giraavaru lagoon. Reclamation of 54 hectares had previously been slowed down.
With the resumption of reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu, the Ministry of Housing has also released the land use plan for the island.
