The new academic year has officially begun following a long school holiday, with students returning to classrooms across the Maldives.
A total of 80,715 students are enrolled in 219 government schools, from preschool to Grade 12. These students will be taught by 9,952 teachers nationwide, according to the Ministry of Education.
Ministry statistics show that 4,790 students applied for admission to Grade 1 this year. Of these, 3,042 students are from schools in the islands, while 1,748 are from schools in the Greater Malé Region. The ministry also reported that 1,530 students moved to Malé City this year, with an additional 836 students relocating to Hulhumalé.
As per the academic calendar, the mid-term break for the first term will be from May 24 to May 30. Students will also have holidays from July 17 to August 1.
