The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into the death of a Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) employee who passed away following a medical emergency during work.

MPL confirmed that the employee, identified as 30-year-old Ameen Abdul Hameed, suffered a seizure while on duty at the Male' Commercial Harbor this morning. Ameen served as a Senior Deck Hand in the Marine Craft Section of the Fleet Service Department.

In a statement to the media, the Police noted they received reports around 10:46 AM today regarding an MPL employee falling between two tugboats docked in the harbor area. The Police further stated that Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) informed them the individual was pronounced dead on arrival.

However, MPL's account suggests that the employee passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital.

According to MPL: "While on duty, Ameen suffered a seizure and fell into the sea near the western jetty area of the Male' Commercial Harbor. Following the incident, the company's Health and Safety Department’s Emergency Response Team immediately attended to the scene. Ameen was transported to IGMH via ambulance, where he passed away while undergoing medical care."

Ameen Abdul Hameed had been an employee of MPL since 2020. The authorities are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
