The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has started procuring yellowfin tuna weighing between 10 and 15 kilograms.
MIFCO Senior Manager and Public Relations Officer Shifza Mustafa said centres and vessels have begun purchasing tuna in this size range at a price of MVR 20 per kilogram. She said procurement took place yesterday at Kooddoo Port, Addu Port, Fuvahmulah City, GDh. Gaddhoo and GDh. Thinadhoo.
Shifza added that yellowfin tuna weighing over 15 kilograms are being purchased at MVR 25 per kilogram. The procurement is being carried out through MIFCO vessels and collection centres.
She said the move is part of the Government’s efforts, in collaboration with MIFCO, to support and develop the fisheries sector and address challenges faced by fishermen.
MIFCO has also begun purchasing large quantities of yellowfin tuna from Kandu Oiy Giri Island from the 10th of this month, at a rate of MVR 25 per kilogram.
