Maavah MP Ahmed Shakir has requested the Parliament’s State Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee to investigate the alleged misappropriation of advance payments made by Maldive Gas.
In a letter sent to Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Shakir said the request was based on credible documents circulating in newspapers and on social media. The letter highlighted concerns over an advance payment of USD 246,000 made for a shipment worth USD 800,000 ordered by Maldive Gas in October 2024, describing the matter as a serious allegation against a state-owned company.
The issue was discussed at a parliamentary meeting attended by Maldive Gas Managing Director Abdulla Mohamed, Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad, and South Hulhumalé MP Dr. Mohamed Waheed. Separately, the Parliament’s Committee on Oversight has also asked the Committee on Investigation to look into a threatening social media post made against Ahmed Shamheed.
The case was first reported in April last year. So far, neither the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee nor the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has released any information on the matter.
