The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to 100 years in prison and fined him MVR 400,000 for possession of cannabis.
The defendant, Ahmed Yasih, faced multiple charges filed by the state in connection with the case. These included drug trafficking, trafficking of diamorphine, cannabis trafficking, and trafficking in narcotics. He was also charged with possession of cannabis plants.
The case began after police received a report that a cannabis plant was located near the door of a house on Banafsa Magu, Malé. Upon investigation, police found a cannabis plant on the ground near the entrance of a house. After opening the apartment and conducting a search with the defendant’s permission, officers discovered four cannabis plants on the balcony and two more inside the apartment.
Police also found a large quantity of diamorphine and cannabis in the apartment, leading to additional drug trafficking charges.
For the drug trafficking offence, the Criminal Court sentenced Ahmed Yasih to 25 years in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 100,000.
