The Ministry of Higher Education has reported that MVR 151 million was spent on the government’s free degree scheme last year.

According to statistics released by the ministry, total expenditure on the programme over the past two years has reached MVR 301.6 million. The figures show that 2,798 students enrolled in first degree programmes last year with financial assistance provided by the government.

The ministry also reported that 3,286 students graduated from the free degree programme during the year. At present, 8,680 students are studying under the programme, including 5,486 female students and 3,194 male students.

The free degree programme is part of the government’s efforts to expand access to higher education and support students pursuing undergraduate studies.
