Police have reported that scam cases in December 2025 resulted in losses exceeding MVR 1.9 million, with a rise in the number of reported incidents during the month.
Statistics released by the Anti-Scam Center show that 179 scam cases were reported in December. Of these, 89 cases were fully resolved, while about half of the money lost in another 45 cases was recovered.
Most scams were linked to e-commerce platforms, accounting for 80 cases. Other reported cases included fraudulent obtaining of money, money laundering, and phishing, as well as vision and job-related scams.
Despite the losses, the Anti-Scam Center recovered around MVR 4 million in December. This figure also includes money recovered from scam cases reported in November.
Police said that efforts to recover lost funds have shown progress, with more than a third of scam-related losses recovered over the past 10 months.
