Following the submission by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to appoint Dr. Aishath Rameela as the President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), the matter has been forwarded to the Human Rights and Gender Committee for further review.
Dr. Rameela was officially appointed as a member of the HRCM on December 3rd, following the Parliament's approval of her nomination on October 29th of last year.
Her appointment to the HRCM came after the term of the former commission president, Mariyam Muna, expired. With the conclusion of Muna's tenure, the position of HRCM President remains vacant. Under the current legal framework, the President appoints a chairperson from among the commission members, subject to the approval of the People's Majlis.
Dr. Rameela served as the first Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare under the current administration. However, she resigned from her ministerial post on December 1, 2024, due to health-related concerns.
The HRCM is currently composed of five members: Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, Ahmed Magsoom, and Dr. Aishath Rameela.
