Statistics from the Elections Commission (EC) have revealed that the People’s National Congress (PNC) now boasts a membership of over 74,000.
According to the EC's figures for the year 2025, although nine political parties remained registered by the end of the year, the majority failed to meet the 10,000-member threshold.
The PNC holds the highest number of registered members in the Maldives. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) follows in second place with 43,784 members.
The Jumhooree Party (JP) ranks third with 12,343 registered members. Other registered parties include the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) with 9,686 members, Adhaalath Party with 8,267 members, Maldives National Party (MNP) with 5,133 members, People’s National Front (PNF) with 3,012 members, The Democrats with 2,952 members, and the Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) with 1,710 members.
Despite nine parties being listed on the registry, only four meet the legal requirements to receive state funding from this year's budget.
Data published by the EC indicates that as of November 25, 2025—the date the state budget was approved—only the MDP, Jumhooree Party, MDA, and the ruling PNC maintained a membership exceeding 10,000.
Under the Political Parties Act, 0.01 percent of the approved annual state budget is allocated to political parties that maintain at least 10,000 members.
While five parties received funding from the 2025 budget, the Adhaalath Party will be excluded from this year's disbursement due to its failure to meet the statutory membership requirement. Additionally, the EC introduced a new mechanism on the first day of this year, allowing general members to resign from their respective parties instantaneously.
The EC announced earlier this month that members can process their resignations through the portal https://my.elections.gov.mv.
Speaking to "One" on December 7, 2025, EC Vice President Salah Rasheed stated that the procedure for immediate resignation of general members would be implemented after January 1st.
Under this rule, "everyone except those holding senior positions within a party can resign immediately upon request," Salah explained.
Salah further clarified that individuals holding specific roles such as Party Treasurer, Registrar, President, or Chairperson—whose details must be maintained in the EC’s official records—cannot resign instantaneously. This exception exists because a formal due process must be completed for individuals in such administrative and leadership positions.
