Sunny Umar, the head of The Travel Guys Private Limited and a travel media business operating under the Halal Tourism brand, has been ordered by the Criminal Court to remain in detention until the end of his trial in connection with a case involving the sexual abuse of a minor.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that the detention order was issued by the court following a request made by the prosecution. The office has also confirmed that the investigation into the allegations against Sunny has been extended.
Sunny was initially remanded to 30 days in police custody on December 3. After the remand period ended, he was brought before the court for further questioning. The Prosecutor General’s Office then requested that he be detained until the conclusion of the trial, which the court approved.
According to police, Sunny was first summoned to the Family and Child Protection Department on December 1 for questioning. Later that same night, he was arrested at Velana International Airport while attempting to travel abroad. Police had earlier informed the media that the arrest was carried out under a court order related to the alleged sexual abuse of a minor.
