Coach Athif Mohamed, widely known as Athi, has expressed confidence that the Maldives women’s futsal team will be able to compete strongly in the upcoming Women’s SAFF Futsal Championship, despite the country lacking a dedicated indoor futsal facility.

The tournament will take place from the 13th to the 27th of this month at the Nonthaburi Stadium in Thailand. This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time the Maldivian women’s futsal team is preparing for an international competition.

Athi explained that training is currently focused on tactical preparation and helping players understand the futsal system. He noted that futsal in the Maldives has traditionally relied more on planning and game awareness rather than heavy physical training. While the approach has evolved over time, the team is now committed to following a structured and well-prepared game plan.

According to the coach, many of the current players are already familiar with the futsal system, which is why women’s futsal has been actively played in the Maldives. However, he highlighted the clear difference between playing outdoors and indoors, stating that performance improves once players adapt to the indoor environment and fully understand the system.

Although practicing indoors remains a challenge, Athi believes the team will be ready to face it. He acknowledged that this is the country’s first regional women’s futsal tournament and pointed out that while the Maldives lacks indoor facilities, players in other countries often gain experience through various indoor sports. Since the tournament was announced, the team has begun indoor training to better prepare.

Despite the obstacles, the coach remains optimistic and believes the Maldivian team will put up a strong fight against regional opponents and aim for a respectable finish in the championship.
